Eve made it out of the prison with perfect composure. Her ears were ringing as if a bomb had gone off in the room. It wasn’t until she was on the freeway, speeding back across Virginia towards Quantico, that she finally caved and wept freely.

What else had she expected? That her father, who had been locked in solitary confinement for the last fifteen years, would somehow have the critical clue that would crack her current case? Just because some sicko had adopted her father’s twisted calling card didn’t mean Howard knew a thing about it. All she’d accomplished was wasting more time and gasoline driving all over the state, and thrown a wrench in her own focus on the case.

And yet, even as she berated herself for wasting the time and energy and for setting her hopes on her father, Eve’s highly analytical mind refused to let the trip be a complete loss. She thought about the things her father had chosen to remember. He’d recalled two events from her childhood, first after her victorious soccer tournament, and then again at her honor roll ceremony. What did these memories have in common? Eve turned it over as she sped through the late morning.

Both memories recalled triumphant moments, or what should have been triumphant moments. He chose to talk about the memories that highlighted her athletic and academic prowess, albeit in their childhood forms. That was important. He was flattering her, but also putting her back in the child role, establishing power and authority in their conversation. He’d said that he would always be her father, that he had created her from nothing.

She’d been thirteen, an age when she didn’t want to be looked at in public even when she was perfectly clean, dressed, and made up. After the tournament, she’d been sweaty, her uniform caked in mud, her hair escaping from her ponytail and flying everywhere. She didn’t want to draw attention, and her father wouldn’t put her down.

And the honor roll memory, too, was tainted with shame and disappointment. Her name hadn’t been called, even though she’d made the grade. The feeling of anger and embarrassment was palpable, even in the memory.

Why had he brought that up?

Eve saw the sun flaring off the D.C. skyline in the distance, and pressed her foot down on the gas. She was on the verge of something. There was a message hidden somewhere in the seemingly random memories her father chose to bring up. He was trying to help.

Eve’s eyebrows nearly jumped off her face. He was trying to help, in spite of his rampant sickness.

She racked her brain, gripping the wheel so that her knuckles turned white. The bridge was right there. What did these memories have to do with the Swallowtail killings? What was the link?

The teacher that called the honor roll at her sophomore awards ceremony, Mr.
